The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one the greatest treasures NYC has to offer. It spans 4 city blocks and has 3 floors. It is a cultural as well as architectural icon and is always busy. The Met, as it is called, is often crowded on school days with tours of children from all five boroughs. It located on a strip of the city that is called Museum Mile.

The size and diversity of the artwork on display is even more impressive; the museum's collection contains works from every part of the world, spanning the Stone Age to the twentieth century. The Egyptian Art gallery includes a whole temple that was shipped to America as a gift.

The collections of the Metropolitan Museum attract more visitors than any other attraction in New York City, 5 million per year.

Getting at least a little bit lost at the Met is inevitable. Floor plans help, but only so much. Despite their seeming complexity, though, the galleries are arranged to help you navigate through with ease. If you get mixed up, there are always museum personnel nearby who can give you directions Going through the entire Met is a full day (or two) affair and even then...you won't see everything.

The contents of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection represent a diversity of age, medium and geographic origin. The Egyptian Art collection includes pieces from 300,000 B.C. – 4th century A.D. Other elements of the permanent collection include Musical Instruments, Modern Art, and The Cloisters.

Gift Shop

The Met Store is a fabulous place to buy gifts; you will find publications based on past and present exhibits, stationary, puzzles, jewelry and other reproductions produced by the Museum. Upstairs there are rugs and posters for home decorating with style. It is world famous.

Admission

The suggested price for admission is $20.00. Almost everyone pays this much, but a very smart NYer on a very tight budget knows that if you really can't afford the admission price, you can donate any amount. Don't expect it to make you popular. You are given a little metal badge that you must wear on your clothes at all times.
