Character Background

Caleb was born to Dr. Ronald and Sara Carter in Houston Texas. He was very much a daddy's boy, spending much of his time with his father, who doted on him. His life seemed ideal until school, where no matter how hard he tried, sometimes too hard..he was never really accepted.

When he turned 6 years old, a ghost appeared to him. A little girl with a broken neck about 8 years old. Unable to explain exactly what she was, his parents thought he had an imaginary friend. The manifestation was weak, and unable to communicate exactly what it needed from him. After a few months, this phantom, frustrated at being unable to explain what it wanted, stopped visiting him. But over the years, other things did. His home, unknown to him was also home to a murder spirit that was brought into existence by his own fathers murder of the little girl, whose ghost had visited him. When not further inspiring his father into committing more murders, it would whisper to other children in the neighborhood, to kill small animals, cats, and dogs mostly. And then, it would scare the living hell out of Caleb, mostly haunting his dreams. He suffered from nightmares through his adolescence.

When he turned 14, the month leading to his first change, the spirits assaults became much worse. Blood seemed to flow like lava down the walls of his room. Shadows moves just outside of his field of vision and one night, the nightmares were worse than ever before. One night, the girl with the broken neck who had haunted him in childhood reappeared. She beckoned him to follow her outside, and he did. Crossing his backyard towards the tool shed, he noticed the light was on, dad must be in there. He never made it any closer, because a large black wolf leaped the fence and ran to him, biting him in his shoulder. Screaming in pain as the wolf ran off, he saw his father run out to him, worry all over his face. He didn't notice at the time, that even before touching the wound, his fathers hands were already coated in blood.

Several days later, he felt himself drawn to the library, searching old newspapers for a picture of the girl. He discovered her name was Dawn, and she was the first victim of a child killer who was never caught, and had killed at least 4 other children over the years since. After a time, he realized that the timing of each disappearance, as well as the city they happened in, coincided with his own fathers medical conventions.

He made the horrifying realization that the ghost had tried to tell him that his father was the killer, and he ran from the library. As he ran home to confront his father, he shifted for the first time. One moment he was running, the next he was running on all fours, his mind all but broken from grief and confusion. His eyes opened then, the spirit world, he saw things then that were above and beyond what he had, already. His moved, as a wolf, through the woods, seeing the spirits of the animals, of the trees, and as he moved towards his home, human made spirits that fed off of innocents. He saw, through the window, his father asleep in his chair, with the murder spirit hunched over his back, whispering to him.

He sneaked into the shed, and smelled the blood. Human blood. The next morning he woke, naked and confused, and that was when the Big Sky Pack burst in. They explained to him what he was, and that they would, let him decide his fathers fate. In the end, wracked with guilt but with the support of the pack, he turned his Father in, and together they destroyed the Murder Spirit.

He pulled himself together with the help of the pack, and continued his education. Studying medicine in school, and devouring everything he could find on death and the afterlife, in both school, and with his pack. When he was 18, internal politics caused him to challenge the alpha of his pack for leadership. It was a foolish move and he lost. Beaten and defeated, he left the pack. He moved to Japan when he was 19, in 1996.

He went to medical school completing a 4 year residency in anatomical pathology and one year of forensic pathology fellowship in Tokyo, Japan, where he had decided to move.

While attending school there, he joined a new pack, and was approached by members of the Lodge of Death. He suffered through the initiation, facing his own death, and becoming better for it. The Lodge gathered his pack, and set up a mock funeral for him. He was laid on a pyre and set listened to them speak of him as though he were dead. Some of their comments were touching, some insightful. Then he was set ablaze. After a minute of intense pain, that he fought from showing, The flames finally died and a spirit hidden amid the smoke appeared, giving it's blessing and then whispered to him of his ultimate death.

Using his Gifts, he spent much of his time, helping ghosts to move on, or eliminating those who cause too much trouble on this side of the shadow. To him, Ghosts are as much his responsibility as are spirits. In 1999, he met a black woman named Imara, a wolfblooded, and they had a little girl together, Chiwa. Knowing he was in no shape to be a father and that the enemies of the Uratha, and the vengeful dead might make them targets, he didn't remain with them, though he does see his child and helps to take care of her. He took a job as a coroner with one of the large hospitals.

In 2004, a skirmish with a group of Pure left his pack broken, with several members dead. The remaining ones left to find new packs rather than be reminded of their losses. Caleb drifted along alone as long as he could, and fell in with a few lived packs while managing to finish his doctorate, and moving from being a coroner to a Medical Examiner. In 2010 he took on a job with the New York City Medical examiners office, working from New York Downtown Hospital. Once again, he's packless, and looking.
